How to get a referral to a psychiatrist in Canberra

You can ask your GP for a referral to see a specific psychiatrist, if you know which doctor you want to see.

Depending on your situation, you might prefer to see a particular psychiatrist with special qualifications.

For example, Dr Daniel Heard sees adult patients over 35, with a special interest in patients over 65, and interest in conditions of ageing such as dementia and memory loss.

To see all the psychiatrists’ and clinicians’ bios and special interests, go to build your team, view their profiles and interests, and ask your GP to refer you to the person of your choice.

Referral@2x

In your referral letter, your GP should include:

  • The name of the psychiatrist or clinician you want to see
  • Waymind, Level 1, 77 Denison Street, Deakin ACT 2600
  • Referring doctor's contact details
  • Patient's contact details
  • Patient’s date of birth
  • Patient's medical history
  • Patient’s presenting concern
  • Diagnosis (if known)
  • Past treatments tried for this condition
  • Any current medications

Your GP can send the referral letter:

  • via HealthLink to EDI: WAYMINDA
  • to our efax at 02 5104 6464
  • via email to referrals@waymind.com.au

Contact reception on 02 5104 6463 if your GP needs provider numbers.

Please note: psychiatrists and clinicians will consider suitability of each patient and advise whether they can accept a referral, then Waymind's reception team with contact the patient directly to book an appointment. If they are not able to accept a referral, our team will contact the GP in writing to decline.

That’s OK, we can help you find a doctor or clinician who’s right for you.

Your GP can address the referral to Waymind, noting the required specialty (psychiatrist, psychologist, dietitian etc) and include some information about your presenting condition or diagnosis.

Then our team can recommend a doctor or clinician with availability to see you at Waymind in Deakin.

Referral process

Your GP can send your referral to Waymind via Medical Objects or HealthLink (secure platforms for transferring patient information between doctors).

Otherwise, your GP can fax your referral letter to Waymind at 02 5104 6464.

If you want to send the referral yourself, you can email it to referrals@waymind.com.au

If your preferred psychiatrist can accept your referral, you’ll get an email reply or phone call inviting you to book your appointment time.

If the doctor or clinician is not able to accept your referral, they'll send a letter to your GP to say that they are not able to accept at this time.

When your appointment is booked, you’ll receive financial consent information.
It’s a document that tells you what your doctor will charge for your consultation, and the Medicare rebate for the consultation.

You’ll need to sign and return a form via email to confirm that you agree to pay the fees when they are due.

Psychiatrists and allied health clinicians may charge a prepayment to confirm your appointment time.

If you don’t attend your appointment, or if you cancel or delay within 2 business days to the hour of the appointment, a cancellation fee may apply (see cancellation policy).

After an initial consultation, your doctor will write a letter back to your GP or referrer. The letter will share important details about your medical history and treatment recommendations.

Your psychiatrist may invite you to see them again. Depending on your condition, this may be in 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, or longer.

Your doctor might recommend you see other clinicians at Waymind, to support your treatment.

Your psychiatrist may recommend you see another clinician at Waymind, such as a psychologist, dietitian or exercise physiologist.

Your psychiatrist can refer you directly to psychologists and you won’t need to see your GP again for a new referral.

You will need to get a referral and chronic disease management plan or team care plan from your GP to see a dietitian or exercise physiologist to get the rebate under Medicare.
