Psychology

At Waymind, your psychiatrist may introduce you to a psychologist to support your mental health treatment.

In fact, seeing a psychologist can help you through a difficult period in your life. That’s because it can help to have someone to talk to, who isn’t going to judge you.

We’re here for you, through life’s ups and downs.

Expect some homework between sessions. This might include journaling, and meditation or mindfulness practice.

Please note: Psychologists are not able to prescribe medication or adjust doses of medication. You’ll need to see a psychiatrist about your medication options.

Psychology treatments under Medicare

To access Medicare benefits (rebates) for psychology services, you need a referral from:

Your GP who is managing your treatment under a mental health treatment plan

OR

A psychiatrist

Referrals from your GP under a treatment plan generally allow for up to 10 individual psychology sessions in a year, plus up to 10 group allied mental health services each year. (In this case, group therapy doesn’t include couples therapy or family therapy).

If you have
private health insurance with extras including psychology, you may be able to claim some of the out-of-pocket costs on your insurance. Please check your policy for waiting periods, inclusions and limits.
